트위터가 트럼프 행정부 코로나19 태스크포스 자문역인 스콧 애틀라스 박사의 트윗을 삭제했다.
스탠포드 대학 후버연구소 출신의 애틀라스 박사는 17일 오전에 “마스크가 효과가 있습니까? 아니요”라고 적은 트윗을 올렸으나 다음날 삭제당했다. 트위터 측은 애틀라스 박사의 트윗이 코로나19 거짓 정보 정책을 위반했다고 밝혔다.
애틀라스 박사는 코로나 사태에서 마스크의 용도는 타인과 가까이 위치한 경우, 특히 상대가 고위험군에 속할 경우로 제한적이라고 밝혔다. 그는 마스크보다는 자발적인 사회적 거리 두기가 더 중요하다고 트윗에서 설명했다.
애틀라스 박사는 언론사인 페더럴리스트와의 이메일 교환에서 삭제된 트윗에서 전달하려고 한 의도를 설명했다.
첫째, LA 카운티, 마이애미 데이드 카운티, 하와이, 앨러배마, 필리핀, 일본, 영국, 스페인, 프랑스, 이스라엘은 의무 마스크 착용에도 불구하고 확진자 수가 폭발했다.
둘째, 브리티시 메디컬 저널의 편집장인 옥스포드 대학의 칼 헤네건 박사가 CEBM에 기고한 글. “20년 동안 유행병을 준비해왔지만 마스크 착용의 가치에 큰 불확실성이 존재합니다.”
셋째, 세계보건기구가 6월 5일에 발표한 가이드라인. “지역사회 환경에서 건강한 사람들의 마스크 착용은 양질의 또는 직접적인 과학적 증거에 기반하고 있지 않습니다. 그리고 이익보다는 고려해야 할 해악이 존재합니다.”
넷째, 미 질병관리통제센터가 발표한 논문. “우리의 시스템적 평가는 실험실에서 확인된 인플루엔자의 전염에 있어 마스크의 큰 효과를 발견하지 못했습니다.”
